Chevron New Energies – Houston Lobby

Two immersive experiences elevate an HQ lobby to welcome, inform and inspire visitors and employees.

INTRODUCTION

Chevron New Energies is the ‘Human Energy Company’, actively implementing effective lower carbon solutions around the world. The company wanted to engage and inform visitors by introducing education, interaction, wellness and energy into its headquarters lobby spaces.

However, Chevron was uncertain how to turn this ambitious vision into a working solution. To bring the vision to life, Electrosonic collaborated with content producers Fivestone Studios and architects PDR Corporation throughout the discovery, conceptual and technical design phases.

By collaborating on design, the team created two dramatic experiences that educate and inspire visitors and employees. A striking 20-foot-long interactive LED wall dominates the main lobby. In the elevator lobby, a dynamic motion-sensitive multimedia floor projection is accompanied by an intricate soundscape.

OVERVIEW

In the main lobby, content for the LED video wall is controlled by an interactive touchscreen that serves as a gateway to a virtual globe. When visitors touch the screen’s pop-up menu, the globe spins, revealing regional-specific content.

Dynamic content then appears seamlessly on the LED wall. The multimedia display incorporates videos, images and text - all synchronized to provide a comprehensive understanding of Chevron’s global activities. Audio from embedded ceiling speakers augments the immersive experience.

In the elevator lobby, visitors encounter a dynamic multisensory floor projection experience featuring a river and other natural elements. Five projectors embedded in the ceiling cast captivating visuals directly onto the floor. Natural sounds heighten the immersive experience.

As visitors cross the space, their footsteps are tracked by motion-sensing cameras, triggering interactive content such as realistic splashes in the virtual water. The floor experience is connected to live weather data. Content, powered by Pixera servers, dynamically evolves based on the season and weather conditions outside. In fall, virtual leaves cascade down, while winter brings virtual snow. In stormy weather, raindrops fall accompanied by the rumble of thunder.

CHALLENGE

Translating Chevron’s vision into a viable technical solution required extensive brainstorming and blue-sky conceptualization, as well as detailed technical design. To deliver the creative vision, sophisticated projection studies and complex integration of systems and data were essential.

With a tight deadline, the team had to resolve infrastructure and integration challenges before technical design was complete. Juggling so many project aspects required effective collaboration throughout.

SOLUTION

Throughout the discovery and detailed design process, Electrosonic collaborated with the content producers and equipment suppliers to ensure that every element contributed to the multi-sensory immersive experience.

Collaboration seamlessly extended into the build phase, where Electrosonic fostered open communication to ensure the integrator fully grasped and embraced the design intent. This enabled a streamlined transition between design and build to bring the creative vision to life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

The innovative fusion of immersive, interactive technology in the main lobby creates an engaging educational space. Dynamic content on the LED wall provides a dramatic showcase that allows visitors to learn more about the company by interacting with the virtual globe.

The elevator lobby experience reflects natural elements, aligning seamlessly with Chevron’s green initiatives. It creates a sense of calm and wellness in a busy space.
