Inside View Boston

This 59,000-square-foot observation deck experience spans multiple floors at the Prudential Center in Boston, MA. The solution connects visitors to the city while providing an interactive planning tool that enables them to discover the city's diverse offerings.

Breathtaking views integrate with immersive, interactive audiovisual technologies such as virtual itinerary building, a projection-mapped 3D city model, virtual viewers and a 270-degree theatre to create a highly personalized visitor experience. Accessible features like touch installations integrated with audio descriptions ensure that View Boston is a fully inclusive destination.

Electrosonic, in partnership with Christie Digital, Float4, FrankNDesign, JRA, Lightborne, Nanolumens and 7thSense, took responsibility for blue sky technology concepts, audiovisual and control system design, detailed engineering and system integration.

“I think Electrosonic was the glue that stitched these pieces together... all of their work cuts across each and every exhibit from, the projectors you see downstairs, the projectors you see behind me, all of the screens you encounter, that’s Electrosonic's fingerprints there,” said Vicky Plestis, Development Project Manager at BXP.

A new way to explore a city

View Boston is now a world-class attraction, playing a vital placemaking role in enhancing Boston's identity and inspiring visitors to experience the city’s must-see attractions.

Experiential technology elevates the observation deck experience, setting it apart and transforming the way people discover the city. Thanks to its accessibility, View Boston opens the door for a diverse and broad audience to fully engage with the city's rich offerings.

Highlights of the AV technology:

  • An immersive elevator experience features 14 55-inch displays and synchronized audio, showcasing the city’s sights and sounds.
  • On the 52ndfloor, ten interactive virtual viewers with 32-inch touchscreens allow guests to pinpoint specific city locations. They then see an augmented-reality landscape on the screen that reveals what they can do at that site through animation, illustrations and local information.
  • Guests can add that information to a personalized ‘itinerary’ by scanning their entry ticket via a barcode reader. They finalize their itineraries in the Finale space at one of 12 kiosks equipped with 32-inch LED touchscreens, barcode readers and speakers.
  • At Boston 365 guests encounter a 50-foot-wide 3D scale model of the city. Immersive storytelling brings the model to life as projection mapping from 31 projectors synchronizes with audio to display 12 looped narratives that celebrate Boston’s highlights.
  • In the Open Doors 270-degree immersive theater, five projectors and a 6.2 sound system showcase a compelling short-film in 18k resolution.

A team effort

Innovative engineering, expert audiovisual design, seamless integration, rigorous testing and collaboration with partners were instrumental in delivering an experience that sets new standards for observation decks.

The success of this remarkable project is due to the fantastic collaboration between clients, partners and Electrosonic’s team of design consultants, engineers, fabricators, project managers and support staff who brought the vision to life.

“View Boston is our twelfth project to be recognized by Commercial Integrator over the past ten years,” said Sean McChesney, Electrosonic’s Chief Revenue Officer. “We’re delighted to showcase View Boston this year because it is such a strong way to immerse yourself in the power of fusing architecture, storytelling and technology.”
